Samsung Watch

by: Christian Fuller

Just recently, Samsung released its new innovative smart watch called the Galaxy Gear. This product is the first of its kind and is a direct threat to Apple’s future products due to its early launch. Samsung, as well as other phone brands, has been in fierce competition with Apple since the emergence of its iPhone. Samsung’s Galaxy Gear was launched before Apple’s iWatch and has the features of making phone calls, take photos, listen to music, and make videos. The smart watch is priced at $300 and is only compatible with the Galaxy Note 3 as well as the Galaxy Note 10.1.

The ad campaign for this advanced smart watch technology used the theme of nostalgia to attract its audience. In the commercials, Samsung uses television shows such as Knight Rider, Jetsons, Power Rangers, Predator, and Star Trek, to display the use of smart watches for each of the main characters. The commercial shows the progression overtime to what was considered future technology is now relevant and accessible today. This ad seems to be geared to people in the age range of 18-50, due to audience familiarity of the shows. I feel that this ad is very effective because it shows how far we have come in the technology realm as well as presenting Samsung as the front runners of technology for the future. This can and will open doors in the future of Samsung, in turning future technology of the past to something attainable in the present. How affective is this ad campaign to you? How can this revolutionize technology of the future?

  1. Great post Christian. It seems that some of the "coolness" is wearing off of the Apple brand. The constant marketing war against Apple that windows and other brands are pushing now seems to be making an impact. I have personally seen a few people who have been long term iPhone users switch to android for various reasons. While Apple's stock price is still high, I would like to see more innovation in each new model rather a change in one or two features.

  2. I agree with Sheldon. Apple has lost its flare. It used to draw people with their build quality and customer service. But now many consumers have shown, repeatedly, that they will trade and buy most refreshed Apple products. This has led Apple to make several cutbacks in innovations and customer service.

I do not feel that Smart watches will be the next big thing, but I'm sure in the late 1980s, they might have said the same thing about having a portable phone that would have apps that could share pictures over internet. If I had money, I would invest into the research and implementation of Google Glasses. I feel, if properly executed and marketed correctly, they will become the next sought-after device.

    1. I disagree about apple's customer service, since I recently had problems with my macbook pro (which is out of warranty) and was able to get a brand new 2013 model, which is 3 years newer than my old macbook, because I have a iphone, ipad, and ipod. It is this level of customer service which keeps me coming back to apple, no other company would have done anything close to what apple did for me. And I believe that the google glasses could be big if they find a way to execute the things you said in your post, and also if they could find a way to have a app on the watch to make them go hand in hand together, that would be nice.

  3. Marvelous job Christian. I agree with Sheldon and Gregory. Apple toped off the market in 2010 when Iphone's started to take over. Now in 2013, there drive they had back then is not the same as Samsung has ben on the rise introducing new products such as the Galaxy 3 and 4. Basically everything that Apple has added to make there equipment better, Samsung has matched their effort. Apple is still on top of marking but I see lots of people switching to android for numerous reasons.

  4. I really enjoyed reading the post Christian. I believe Samsung is becoming a gigantic competitor for Apple, and with all the new technology and gadgets they have been presenting they are becoming a front runner of taking over the technology market. More importantly, Apple has been trying to find its grove again in society ever since Steve Jobs past. I believe Apple will return strong, but I am highly interested to see more of the gadgets Samsung has been creating. Overall, I believe this was a great post and you made valid points about the commercial.

  5. Good post. It's weird to think that a few years ago no one was coming out with direct products that could rival apple and now they are. Like the first couple of post said, I've known a few people that were apple die hard fans that have switch from apple to another phone because of their lack of innovation now. I honestly don't know how much innovative these companies can get, but I guess that is the beauty about technology...is that it doesn't have a limit.

  6. I think this watch is really interesting. Just like going back to childhood and watching on television the characters, as described in the article, would talk into their watches and I just thought that was cool. So I am really excited to see where this Samsung watch takes us to the future.
