The Expansion of the Slave Narrative and its Purpose

By: Stan Bolton

In class this past week, we were assigned readings of the accounts of multiple individuals who were alive during the slavery period. These interviews gave a real perspective of what the times were like. I believe it is important to hear stories from those that aren’t recognized as icons in history. I say that because those stories are glorified. They are the extreme and are the outliers. I am interested in expanding this idea of stories told by the “unglorified.” I would like to expand this idea to the recollection of the civil rights. We read in the history books about the Martin Luther King’s and the Rosa Parks and the Malcolm X’s. I know for a fact that there are influential people that aren’t recognized but were there and those stories should get out. I am interested in doing a documentary series that interviews those unheard voices. What do you all think? Below is a link to stories I have found on the movement that shed a different light.
