The adolescent stage, which is probably the
most critical part of personal development, is a time of exploration and
self-discovery. Before the age of technology, an individual accomplished this
by exploring their environment, which, in turn, helped them gain new
experiences. However, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, due to
rapid technological advances, the process of development has changed
drastically for a person during their adolescent stage.
Since children are being reared in homes with
various accesses to the internet, they are influenced by an infinite number of
external forces without even walking out of the front door. This influence
causes children to act in ways or portray identities that are appealing to
others, and not their own self interests. Also, for a healthy development,
children need real-life interactions and relationships. This, too, is often
neglected because of technology.
This video about the affects of technology on our youth was extremely informative and thought-provoking. I will pay this message forward to parents that I know so they can make sure their children are not developing a dependency on technology and will use it to their advantage as they grow older.
ReplyDeleteExcellent video and topic. Technology is really taking over the 21st century and future generations to come. Every time you blink some new technology comes out and the old one gets passed down. Prime example video games or cellphones. Every year they produce a new one and the one gets passed down. The more technology improves the more this generation would rely on it. Technology is causing this generation to not know how to write, or understand the tools use succeed.

ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this video because it is something we have to think about for future generations. Maybe early exposure to Dora The Explorer, Spongebob, and other children shows may hinder the mental growth of our future children. I also like how they endorsed photography as a way of technology interacting with the real word.
I agree with the overall concept of the video, that there are bad side affects to technology but I do disagree with Mr. John Crippen that cameras are the only good technology that exists in the 21st century. The narrator herself stated at the beginning of the video that technology "is the key to evolution and the key to survival". Yes there are a lot of misrepresentation of facts presented by companies to sell there product such as TV shows to help children learn the basic functions that they will learn regardless of even watching the TV show. However there are technology out there that has been proven to work like Rosette Stone.
ReplyDeleteThis was a great topic to start off with. I agree that technology, while good, has at times become a thing of controversy due to the negative impacts of social media. I feel like, while this is an issue society must handle, I believe this begins in the home. If we want children more engaged, and spending time reading, outside, communicating with family, it's up to the parents and family members to establish that lifestyle. Society doesn't give children smart phones, iPads and computers, parents do, and with that, they are responsible for whether they are going to create a learning opportunity through technology or a technological tool used for social media and disengagement from the real world.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great article and video. I'm glad I took the time out to stop, read, and view the video. Then I caught myself doing exactly what she stated: on my computer, while texting, with the TV on in the background. I will consider these later on in life when I have children; when I consider how often I allow them to watch TV. Jordan stated that parents are responsible for giving their kids these tech devices, but if a child sees his peers with a smart phone or computer, they will develop envy. Envy can lead to hate, rebellious actions, and even go as far as the child stealing the device just to "fit in." So there is a line that needs to be drawn, but at the same time, isolation is not the best option. Moderation is.
ReplyDeleteThis subject is a prominent issue that will continue to be prevalent as we get more technologically advanced in society and become more creative with the implementation of technology in our education system. My mother actually owns a elementary school and one of her main issues with her students is their ability to focus for 30-40 minutes without drifting off. There are smart boards in every class and whether the parents of the child are affluent or not does not seem to be a factor in their ability to learn and focus without some technological device aiding them. Teachers must become very creative in their approach in implementing technology to assist their students so that the ever important skill acquisition of critical thinking & interpersonal skills are not stymied. As a firm supporter of the balance between technological and non-technological means of acquiring a quality education, our future lies within our ability to control sound proven techniques technology offers us and not forgetting our natural humanistic capabilities (especially in education).
ReplyDeleteI coincide with my brothers, technology has hindered our current and younger generation to become reliant on technology's constant distraction. I believe that a possible solution to this prominent issue would be to engage students in things that they were passionate about. Giving them the opportunity to fully pursue things that naturally bring them joy takes the focus off of the imaginary and to their own dreams and ambitions. Children are innately creative and with the assistance of their parents they will be in tuned with each other eliminating the perceived distance. This video was tremendously insightful and prepares me for how I would like to raise my children in the modern world.
ReplyDeleteI will take a different stance, I do agree that the use of so many different technology platforms hinders focus. However, if more entrepreneurs focused on leveraging technology to create more useful software and products that serves the purpose of personal development and education on subjects not taught in school(ie: wealth management) - the youth would be powerful beyond measure. It is possible for this to occur if you recognize the opportunities presented to us as problems that are awaiting solutions.

ReplyDeleteWatching this video seems almost eerie, especially giving the fact that I, as an concerned uncle, see my 4 year old nephew falling within these negative effects of technology. He seems to be very disconnected when I try to get him to do math problems on paper with a pen or pencil but more engage with games on tablet that has the same information in which I try to present to him. This could definitely be a problem because he may develop a characteristic trait such as ADD, in which he will not be able to focus on an activity for very long unless it has some type of technological supplement such as a computer, smart phone, or tablet. Interesting enough, Lupe Fiasco mentioned in his song WWJD He Probably LOL Like WTF, "A revolutionary way of being alone
I mean, should we really get a loan?
Hey what's the matter, just tell it to your phone" In these lines you can actually see that people are becoming more disconnected amongst personal interaction of healthily expressing their emotions with their friends or family, in which they just vent through Facebook or Twitter.
Watching this video expressed the negative of effects of technology. It is crazy to see that kids would spend more time with technology than with their love ones. And the video indicated a through study that technology has an effect on the academic performance of students. All this to say that technology has a profound affect on society. I believe that there should be a late introduction of technology for young adults. I believe work ethics, morals, and beliefs would be alter for rising generations if technology continue to be a sociology necessity.
ReplyDeleteThis video highlighted the negative effects of technology on society today, but more importantly our youth. Society is constantly changing here in the United States in addition to technology. The majority of changes in society can be credited to technology, which also encompasses social media. Since the wheel was invented and fire was discovered, we have been seeing a change in the roles and responsibilities in society, which leads us to think, were these changes necessarily good or bad for society. I believe that the emphasis should be put on the parents and self accountability not the creative thinking that has brought the advancement of technology along.
ReplyDeleteBrian Marshall - I thought this video had a lot of good points and points i wasn't inform of as of today. Its a good things they said Cameras was the only form of technology nowadays today that can help teens and young adults reconnect with the world, because that the only thing my younger sister do. It makes me feel good she choosing the right path. I also feel like when it comes to interaction with the parents and kids parents got to step up and put their foot down.
ReplyDeleteI find it very interesting that Children are not helped primarily by the educational toddler programs on t.v. that advertise and promote boosting a Child's learning. It has been studied and scientifically proven that Kids have an heightened sense of learning during the age level 2-5 in the early stages of their lives and that they generally pick up on things more rapidly. On another note, it seems both eerie and ironic that technological multi-tasking causes students to have issues focusing on their schoolwork. The thought has never really resonated for me before and I think there may be validity to this discovery.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very interesting topic. Technology can have some negative effects on kids. I remember watching television one day, and a commercial came on that effectively illustrates this phenomenon.
ReplyDeleteThe commercial was about a grandson who was at his grandma's house. He was watching television while he was giving his dog a walk, and while he was resting on his grandma's couch. How was this possible. His dog was tied to a leash and walking on an exercise machine. When I grandson wanted juice he used his phone to call the grandma. The grandma, who could barely walk got up to go to the other room to answer the ringing phone in the kitchen.
I concur with you. Technology has a major impact on youth today!! This could cause problems in the family as well. If 54% of kids would rather watch t.v. than spend time with a parent, families are in for some trouble.
This was an excellent topic! The more technology advances, the more it seems to take control of each of our lives. Many people spend more of their time online than ever before. Our generation has embraced technology and ignored the downfalls and the negative side effects that come with it. Many of our parents talk about the "Good Old Days" which when explained is walking around town and seeing all of your loved ones. Now, we live in a microwave society where everything is within reach.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this video as well. It highlights the phenomena of the information age happening right before us. Everything is on the internet and is easily accessible. Kids spend more time inside on the computer than outside. There are also a lot of dangerous and corrupting things on the internet that offset learning opportunities that are necessary for jobs
ReplyDeleteIt is true that there are negative effects of technology on kids, but the negative effects can be somewhat minimized. With the new technology and the internet, the way we raise our kids has to be different. There needs to be a different level of interaction, monitoring, rearing, and parents need to be more involved and make sure that whatever negative influences that children are exposed to are countered by a proper rearing and positive and reinforced sets of positive, productive and appropriate values and morals.
ReplyDeleteI feel that the positive effects are way more impactful than negative effects. Overtime as we grow as a generation that is so dependent on technology I am sure that all of the criticism will be taken into account and an attempt will be made to minimize such negative effects. Most people just like to look at the negatives of new things, being resistant to change. Technology is, and constantly will be, a good thing when used correctly.
ReplyDeleteI believe it is no way to turn away from new technological advancements. Everyday technology is improving. We must focus on how to achieve personal growth for adolescents with the use of the new technologies. One way we can use technology for adolescents growth is through the use of interactive learning games. We can use these games to teach the adolescents personal development, if they are not necessarily receiving it in their personal environment.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading and watching this video the only question I ask is why this is happening? Did you notice that all the surveys and information passed was solely based on studies conducted in america? Have any of you all noticed the wide gap of education in our math and science departments on a global scale? Have you all read the latest polls on students who still read and are self aware of the world around them through news papers and updates other than television? Well I would like to say this, in america there is a reason why television is so entertaining and the number 1 reason is because some people on this planet do not want you to notice everything that is going on in the world around you. " There are three types of people in this world, those who do the action, those who watch the action, and those who don't even know whats going on." if you can find where thats from originally power to you.
