Are we ready to colonize other planets?

By: Terence Balmer

Are we truly alone in the galaxy, or are we just a speck of dust in the corner of the monstrous place we call space? For generations people have dreamed of the stars in our vast galaxy and what it would be like to travel to these distant systems. We have watched movies like Star Trek and Star Wars, where going from one planet to the next only takes a matter of minutes and have wondered is it truly possible?

In May 2012, it was announced that ordinary people can submit applications to become the first people to colonize the “Red Planet” Mars. The mission, designated “Mars One colony mission,” will be starting to send groups of four, one person per continent, on a one way trip to Mars beginning in the year 2023. Mars One CEO Bas Lansdrop confirmed the speculation of the mission on August 3, 2013 asking people who would want to go to Mars at conference in Washington, D.C. Although Mars One stopped receiving applications on August 30, 2013 they received more than 100,000 applications, so it would seem that some people are anxious to leave Earth.

However, the question still stands. Are we ready to colonize other planets?

  1. Brian Marshall - I dont think that would be good idea. That a big liabilty you taking trying to live on ANOTHER planet. Who would actually thought we would get to the point where the idea of living on Mars is possible.

  2. Tariq Brown - I believe we could someday colonize other planets. it would be interesting to know I have friends who live on Mars. With global warming going on it wouldn't be a bad a idea to relocate to another planet.

  3. I feel as though this is a wonderful opportunity to colonize and also explore the possibilities of other life forms. With the destruction we are doing to ourselves and this planet, it would be interesting to see the social structure that would be implemented on Mars.

  4. Elijah Peterson - I think it would be a bad idea to colonize other planets because it would cost way too much money to do so. It would be an extremely interesting thing to experience but I don't feel as though we are in a good financial position to make these types of moves. Not yet.

  5. I don't think colonizing another planet is perhaps the best idea, but due to our curiosity as humans we will most definitely carry out the plan. There is a reason why we are here on Earth with the tilt perfectly aligned with the sun and temperatures being just bearable. This will be an interesting expenditure, but nevertheless another venture that may expose us to our finite thinking when considering the cosmos.

  6. I believe colonizing different planets would be a costly endeavor. Given our current level of technology, it would be a huge effort to transport people and supplies through a vast area of space efficiently. As a human race, we would definitely need to establish a collaborated project to succeed in such a task.

  7. I think it might be just the right time to start colonizing other planets. If we have the technology and the means to do something I believe we should make that step. By doing that we take the stress off of Earth and allow it some time to rejuvenate itself while some or most of our population is somewhere else. We could then go back and forth, if money allowed it, and spread our negative effects throughout different planets. I think we should, I am not totally sure if we can though.

  8. When I was younger, I went to space camp for 3 years. While at camp, I was able to tour the spacecrafts, rovers, and other space instruments. From this knowledge, I know we have the infrastructure and technology to make this possible. We have continue taking giant leaps for mankind.

An argument similar to colonizing on a different planet was the original proposal to send satellites into space. Now satellites are used everyday for telephony, television, and even GPS services. Colonizing on different planets will continue to allow for new technological developments such as the advancements satellites have created.

  9. I don't think colonizing another planet is the best way to go. I believe that one must take care of home before going off onto different planets. Until their is stability, at least, of the planet Earth, colonizing another planet will lead to turmoil and eventually be an arms race, just as it was with the Western Hemisphere.

  10. If you think about it, we looking at colonizing another as the British looked at colonizing another country. They believed that if you travel far enough that they would fall off the planet. They didn't believe it would benefit in any type of way. However we need think outside the box. Sooner or later traveling to another planet will be just as common as traveling to another country. I, personally, will not be joining the colonization of Mars but if the natural resources present itself on Mars, trust and believe that many more people are going to invest in this project especially since our natural resources are limited.
