The Revolution of Technology in the Classroom

By: Tariq Brown

“It is possible to teach every branch of human knowledge with the motion picture”. These are the words of Thomas Edison who predicted books would essentially become obsolete in classrooms. As time progresses, studies show technology is become more essential in the classrooms of primary and secondary schools. Students use the technology to do research, write essays and even cheat but very little has changed in the school system since the 1800s.

The cause of this revolution is because of the drastic changes in technology. For example, there are high-speed mobile networks, cheap tablet devices, the ability to process huge amounts of data cheaply, sophisticated online gaming and adaptive-learning software. You can now access textbooks on computers and even take exams online. With new technology, students can work at his or her own pace instead of the pace of the teacher. Essentially, the classroom will be “flipped” so that basic information is taught at home via screen while class time will be spent refining and testing that knowledge.

The question is will children learn more?

  1. This topic seems to be a popular one in this class. In this situation, understanding the balance of using technology and natural learning creatively will cause the child to learn more. The problem is using too much of one of the other; For example, too much technology causes attention deficiency while too much natural learning will cause technology deficiency, so finding a balance is instrumental in our kids success.

  2. Technology is being severely underused in schools especially those in the African American community. I believe that this likely the reason for the lack of African Americans in the Stem majors. http://www.ajc.com/weblogs/get-schooled/2013/sep/16/georgia-tech-professor-asks-where-are-black-studen/

  3. To more specifically answer your question asked at the end of your blog, "will children learn more?" The answer is simply yes. No matter how you see this the bottom line, on the surface answer is that us as a society has more access to information through technology. Exposure to different information or information in all categories rely on its availability. If you can not see or hear, you may never know, but if you can see and either read or hear you can learn. which in fact is saying that more students have a possibility to learn more.

  4. I agree with this article, with the growth of technology the more schools will improve. It does make studying and learning a lot easier, especially since it is at the students pace. The only thing that brings out a doubt in my mind is the laziness that can be developed with the use of technology. If the youth rely on technology to much then they will lose the hard work ethic because it is so easy to use.
