Your Face as Your Password

By: Antwan Harris
With technology rapidly advancing and manual activity becoming a thing of the past, one day you may be able to unlock your iPhone just by looking at it. Apple, Inc. was recently awarded a patent called "Personal computing device control using face detection and recognition." This would simply allow the user of the phone to look at the phone and it would unlock. Instead of using your hands to type in your password, your face would serve as your password.
In order for this to be successful, the technology would scan the individuals face in order to record all of its unique features, such as skin texture, skin color, size, and shape of various facial features. Also, if you would like other individuals to have access to your phone, they can complete the same process that would allow them to have a password as well.
For example, if you were to receive a phone call, your phone would scan your face to make sure it is the face of an authorized user. If it is, the call will go through as normal, but if not, the iPhone will remain locked. The same security will apply for incoming e-mails. Looking at the iPhone would alert you to and display an e-mail. An unauthorized user would prevent the e-mail alert and hide or block the message.
While Apple thinks it will work the best on the iPhone they are also looking into other avenues as well, including TV’s and computers. Apple used as an example a PC's screensaver reacting to your face rather than to a preset period of inactivity. While Apple does have an approved patent, there is a lot of work to be done. So for now we just have to stick with the Touch ID fingerprint sensor on the iPhone 5S.

  1. I believe this is a great security measure to have on our technology devices. However, I have heard of this tactic backfiring multiple times. Hopefully the developers have fixed all of the glitches with the innovation.

  2. The face recognition software would be useful for higher security information, I believe that having that type of security on a phone would be more expensive and drive up the cost.

  3. Thats crazy. Apple just released there iPhone5s with the finger printing lock, and now face passwords will change the game even further. I expect a lot of glitches at first although

  4. Facial recognition password technology will definitely change the security industry. The use of the technology was always seen in movies but it will be interesting to finally see it at the consumer level.

  5. Apple is sticking to the tradition of innovation but i think it would have to go through a lot of tests to refine the software because that is a lot of variables to take into account. Does this mean that i cannot lend my phone to a friend to make a call since it immediately locks out all unauthorized users

  6. Facial recognition password technology will be the future of computer security usage. The fact that our phones automatically locks will be subjective to consumer preferences.

  7. I hope you guys know that this has already been implemented into Samsung's Galaxy S4 along with other Android phones. Apple is always on the back end of innovation, but they end up announcing it as if they were the first to think of the idea. I've waited years for call and text blocking, scheduled messaging, along with many other features. But as usual, Apple continues to be slow at new implementations. That might be their downfall in the long-run. *(2nd comment for December, not late)

  8. Privacy is important to just about everyone, especially the very important documents on your computer. Fraud is becoming gore and more prevalent in todays digital society. Any new technology that can make personal documents more secure will flourish.
