It seems as if it were yesterday, when many households were filled with traditional televisions sets with the very large backings. Now, the vast majority owns at least one or more LCD/LED televisions in their household. Traditional sets are now obsolete. Those old and heavy televisions sets were only capable of handling 480p video resolution (480 vertical scanning lines, to display a picture). Technology has improved and now many homes are being filled with the new LCD/LED television sets capable of providing 1080p video resolution, more than doubling the visual quality of older sets.
The increase in video resolution provides a sharper and clearer image quality. This is where the term “HD” (high definition) stems from. The enhanced visual quality becomes more apparent when viewing sports and playing video games. Players’ physical attributes are more easily discernable; video games render as if the characters shared your living space.
Would you believe that the 1080p is already obsolete? The future is 4K technology. The 4K sets will have four thousand scanning lines to produce an image on screen. This is roughly four thousand times better than the current LCD/LED that we are just beginning to fill our household with.
The 4K sets will provide an even greater viewing experience. Images will be even clearer and sharper. 4K televisions are already making their way to the market. Consumers can now purchase a 4K television for as little as $5,000.
You may believe this pricing to be outrageous, but consider when LCD/LED televisions were first introduced to the market. Their prices were vastly more expensive than what they are today, and this same trend can be expected for these new “ultra-HD” offerings. Within the next five years, 4K televisions are expected to be similar priced to current LCD/LED offerings.

It's hard to imagine a television set could get better than HD. With HD you can play games and watch television with a clear and sharp image. To think 4K television could be four times better is incredible and it is pretty affordable. Technology continues to advance everyday.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Tariq, it was hard to comprehend a television set that is a greater quality than HD. Especially at the same price point. The 4k content is visibly better in the video than the LED screen. As technology grows with the world, its hard to even imagine something, in time, that will be better than the 4k. The future is bright.
ReplyDeleteYou got to be kidding? 4k? Already being sold? And here I’m still thinking about buying multiple 1080p tvs. Truly am surprised by this because I didn’t even know about it. Although, $5000 is a pretty steep price and the tvs they say that support 4k are too big anyways (80+ inches). Also the success of these tvs will depend on when cable boxes and game consoles actually start supporting 4k. Being that the PS3 and Xbox One are just coming out now, I doubt it’ll be anytime soon, and by then there’ll be “8k” or something else.
ReplyDeleteI honestly believe profit margins on the new and improving television productions will ultimately and inevitably become obsolete. The reason for this is not because of the projected shortcomings of visual glamour and specs offered by these devices, but instead the lack of buying power and desire to update to the latest and greatest that the market has to offer for a television. Seriously, the market is changing. Why would I spend $5000.00 on a stationary 4k t.v. when I can capture a similar experience with an iphone 5s equiped with 4k resolution?
ReplyDeleteWe as a society has truly moved from the industrial age to the technological age. It just amazes me that technology is getting better and better. I can't wait until I get to watch something on 4k television!!!
ReplyDeleteI believe that one day people will be able to create a hologram of themselves, and put themselves right in the movies. We could be characters in the movie, so instead of watching a 3D movie and screaming to the characters to "not go in there", we may one day be able to actually interact with them in movies. We may be right there with the main characters.
I have included a link to an article that discusses holographic tv. According to the article, it's closer than we may think.

I agree with Pierre I can not wait until the time comes when holograms and and projections will be the norm. My brother has a 4K television and when I watch cable with him it is as if I am watching the show on set. Technology is moving at breakneck speeds.
ReplyDeleteTelevision now in HD is amazing. I get to play my video games and watch sports and feel like i am in a different zone. If TV in 4k comes to life it for sure is going to better than HD. Everyday the world grows and technology changes so I can see this coming to pass.
ReplyDeleteThe way technology evolves so quickly is an amazing thing to see. I constantly question how developers will be able to create "the next best thing" and as usual they never cease to amaze me with a new innovation. I am excited to see what will occur with technology in the next five to ten years.
ReplyDeleteWhen will this 4K technology be launched and ready for consumers to buy? It would be cool if there is one available by the time of Black Friday because I am actually looking to buy a TV.
ReplyDeleteThese Super HD televisions are just the next step to virtual reality. I believe that technology in the near future will improve home entertainment as a whole. I wonder how movie theaters will improve to keep up with 4K technology.
ReplyDeleteThabiti Stephens - I agree with the class who feel that 4k tv is going to be better than 1080i. The better the resolution the better the picture of the tv. I believe that things will continue to get better as technology evolves.
ReplyDeleteI always find it very interesting to read about new innovative technologies when they are under development. The actual 4K television along with 4K video recording and gaming will change the way we view "virtual reality" in a big way. Producers and video game developers will be able to utilize this new technology to possibly spark a technological wave in a different industry. Cool post John!
ReplyDeleteThis technology is really advancing right before our eyes. How can you get any clearer. I wonder what they can think of next after this T.V drops. Hopefully the prices for these exclusive T.V's is affordable for the middle class and not just the riches. As the future comes everything is getting more expensive. I cant wait to watch these new television.
